Eligible 4th-8th grade students include only those who have not reached their 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2012. Students must not have passed beyond the 8th grade on or before August 31, 2012.
- The following rules also apply: 1) Spellers, their parents,
educators, relatives, or acquaintances must not have obtained a copy of
the 2012 Sponsor Bee Guide for use in studying; 2) Having been
disqualified at any level of the Regional Spelling
Bee program, spellers remain disqualified for the 2013 Scripps
National Spelling Bee and may not seek advancement to the National
Spelling Bee through another sponsor and/or enrollment in another
school; 3) They must not have qualified for the national finals in
Washington, D.C., by spelling in their final local spelling bee any
words that appear in the 2012 Sponsor Bee Guide; 4)They may not
eschew normal school activity in favor of preparation for spelling bees.
